Batam Layer cake known also as kek lapis or kueh lapis is a must have in Batam. It can be found in most malls and Batam ferry terminals.  The time and dedication required to produce a layer cake sets them apart from other cakes.  But where do you go to get the best ones?

It’s likely that you’ll want to buy your layer cake when you arrive or just before you return home to take back as a gift or memento.  This is why you often see layer cakes being sold in shops called Oleh-Oleh.  The local term for something you take home for others after traveling. This is why you will also see them at the ferry terminals.  Especially Batam Center and Harbour Bay where there are more travelers.   Nagoya Hill Mall, BCS Mall, DC Mall and Batam Grand Mall also have stalls selling layer cake.

Sun Li are the original kueh lapis supplier in Batam.  Until recently, they were known as Batam Layer Cakes but chose re-market and changed their name.   This is where we order kueh lapis for delivery to our guests. La Moist also market themselves as Layers. You can find La Moist Nagoya Hill Mall  Sekupang Ferry Terminal as well as Harbour Bay, Batam Center at Centrepoint.  In addition you can find them at Mega Mall, BCS and Nagoya Hill shopping malls.  Favorites at La Moist include the bursting Cheeze flavor as well as the impressive to look at Rainbow cake and unique Honeycombe.

La Moist are also famous in Batam for their Pia Cakes.  A Pia cake is a sweet,  bun sized ball shaped cake made from mung bean, durian, salted egg yolk.  It’s made in many different flavors.  At La Moist you can get Red Bean, Pandan, Salted Egg, Yam, coffee, Pineapple and Banana flavors.  In addition they also have their own Pia cake made with a secret recipe.

Diana Layer cakes are unique because they don’t sell their cakes elsewhere in Batam but at their place of business.  So if you want you kueh lapis from Diana layer cake, you need to go to their outlet to buy it or order their kueh lapis online.  Their place of business is actually tucked away in a part of Batam center and not so easy to find.  So you may need some transport to get there.  Here’s how to find Diana Layer Cakes on Google Maps.

Despite not selling their cakes in separate outlets or via 3rd parties, Diana layer cakes are extremely popular and have been trading since 2004. During the pandemic Diana were actually sending their cakes to Singapore by popular demand.  Their prune Layer cakes which have the largest prunes you’ve ever seen are by far the most popular variety.

Kueh Lapis Holly are also known as Holi.  They brand themselves as “Kueh Lapis Legit” and have quite a strong following in Batam.  We can also order these freshly made for you and have them delivered warm and fresh.

Alya Layer cakes are another layer cake outlet in Batam that has built up a strong reputation for great kueh lapis over the years.  You can find Alya at Golden Land in Batam Center.  As with Sunli and Holly, we can order Alya cakes freshly made.

Mr Ong is a very well known Batam bakery and is long established. You can find Mr Ong on Google Maps in Batam Sari. From swiss rolls in  a range of delicious falvors to their famous Ambon cake, Mr Ong has a great selection to choose from.

If you’re looking for an outlet that sells different kinds of cakes as well as kueh lapis, then Royal Bakery may be ideal for you. They don’t specialize in Layer cakes but sell them as part of their wide selection of cakes.  In addition their moon cakes are very popular too.  They also sell hampers and snack boxes as well as specials for Christmas and Chinese New Year so they’re an ideal place to look for a cake that’s specially wrapped as a gift.

The Master Layer

You can find the Master Layer strategically located at the top of the walkway leading from Hypermart in Nagoya Hill mall.  Here’s the location of The Master Layer in Google Maps. They sell all the main flavors with as well as their own unique butter, almond and cranberry specials.  I’ve never tried it myself but you may be interested in their potato cakes too.  In addition to layer cakes they also sell Pandan cakes, swiss rolls and chiffon cakes in different flavors.  Very convenient if you’re simply on a shopping trip to the mall.

In addition to the specialist outlets we’ve mentioned here you will find lots of smaller stalls in malls and bazaars selling layer cakes.
