It may surprise you to know that there are actually more choice at BCS mall compared to Nagoya Hill as well as Mega Mall. This is because BCS is made of of many smaller stalls and shops offering you a huge choice in all the goods that Batam is famous for selling so cheaply. However if it’s branded goods and well known franchises you’re interested in, then the newly built Grand Batam Mall located just down the road, maybe a better alternative for you. Bargains though are probably easier to find at DC Mall.
For all you ladies, BCS mall is Batam’s primary place for all things girly. From shoes to dresses not forgetting handbags and bling, this is a girls shopping paradise.
For all you men, don’t worry there’s still plenty for you to do whole your better half is browsing.
BCS is located in the busy Penuin area close to BCC Hotel and opposite to the well known Grand Duck restaurant. The nearest ferry terminal is Harbour Bay which is just a few minutes ride. From Batam Center it’s around 15 minutes, whereas from Sekupang and Nongsa ferry terminals the journey is between 30 minutes and an hour.
Mobile Phones, Computers & Electronics
In the basement you will find lots of small stalls selling mobile phones, computers & other electronic items. Here you will find most of the main brands here like Oppo and Samsung as well as a vast choice of mobile phone accessories like covers, cables and chargers.
The larger shops here also sell a range of laptops and play stations at prices cheaper than you will find in Singapore.
This is also a great place to bring any items that need small repairs. Many of the small kiosks here specialize in mobile phone repairs and upgrades.
Duty Free Store
The duty free store is probably the first shop you will see when entering BCS mall from the main entrance. They offer a range of wines, spirits as well as which they claim to be duty free. What you need to remember tough is Batam itself is a duty free area. Despite this, the prices are cheaper than most visitors to Batam will find at home.
JC Supermarket
JC supermarket is just to the right hand side of the duty free store as you walk in. At JC you can get groceries, cosmetics, housewares, spices, fruit & vegetables as well as meats. Many westerners shop here for their range of western condiments like sauces, salad dressings and flavorings.
The quality of the fruit and vegetables you can buy here is good, but the range of fresh meats not so good and more expensive than you can find at Diamond Supermarket at DC mall.
You’re probably aware that for most supermarkets in Batam, the range of dairy products is limited. You can find butter, cheeses as well as fresh milk and yogurt in their small refrigerated area
At JC you’ll notice the long counter serving a really good range of cosmetics, beauty products and medicines. At the end of this counter near the cashiers you will also find the beer section. You may not realized, but beer in supermarkets is sold in a bespoke place where you must to ask for it.
Birthday Cakes
If you’re in Batam to celebrate a birthday, you’ll probably want to buy a cake. BCS mall has a great cake shop located next to the JC supermarket entrance. They have lots of delicious birthday cakes for sale and can decorate and write your greetings on them while you wait. In addition there are several stalls and outlets that sell the famous Batam Layer Cake.
Designer Handbags
Batam has a huge number of shops and stalls selling designer handbags. What you may not be aware of is that the quality of these bags is actually graded. At BCS mall, there are several small kiosks mostly located on the ground floor selling a range of high grade designer bags. You will also find designer type watches being sold at these kiosks. Remember to bargain and bargain hard.
My advice is to search online for the bag you want first by searching for branded tas Batam and take a snapshot. Once you have this with you, you’ll be able to drive a really hard bargain. You won’t get the bags as cheap but you don’t get to feel the quality online.
Money Changer
If you need to change your dollars, ringgit as well as other currencies, there’s a great money changer with really good rates on the ground floor. It is also worth noting that this money changer also sells cheap ferry tickets for both Indonesian and foreign passport holders. They sell for all the main ferry routes and providers.
Chemists, Cosmetics & Perfumes
I spoke at the beginning regarding how BCS mall is a girls shopping paradise. So it’s not surprising that there’s lots of chemist shops like Kimia Farma ( as well as small stores selling cosmetic products and even perfumes. For the perfumes I would advise you to try long before you buy. By that I mean use the testers and then walk around for a while to check the fragrance lasts. The perfumes may smell like the real thing but only the test of time will help you decide how good it is.
Shoe Shops
Looking for new shoes? You’ll be pleased to know there are shoe shops everywhere in BCS mall. Whether for girls boys or sports shoes, there’s lots of places to choose from. My advice on buying shoes is this. If the price seems too good to be true then it probably is. This is especially true of sports shoes. If you’re unsure then I would suggest you use sports shops like Sports station.
Other than that for mens and ladies shoes a close inspection of the stitching will tell you all you need to know.
Gold silver and Accessories
On the ground floor close to the money changer I mentioned, there’s a stall that sells (and buys) gold. They have a large collection for you to choose from. In addition, if it’s just bling or accessories you’re looking for, there’s lots of small stalls selling bracelets, necklaces, earrings as well as other dressy items.
Gramedia Book Shop Batam
Gramedia’s latest special offers are being held in conjuction with teachers day in Indonesia. Here you can find discounts of 30% discount for purchases over Rp 15o,000 rupiah.
At Gramedia you will find a range of English as well as Indonesian books. They have specific areas for religion, education as well as travel among many others. Gramedia also sell a range of musical instruments as well as stationary.
You can find Gramedia next to KFC on the first floor.
Golden Truly Department Store
BCS is the one shopping mall that doesn’t have Indonesia’s well known Matahari store. Instead, you’ll find the Golden Truly department store on floor one as well as floor two. Golden Truly often have a big display showing discounted items and promotions in the atrium on the ground floor. They sell primarily sell clothing and footwear, both male and female. So there’s something here for the guys too. Golden Truly are big on promotions, but don’t let that fool you. Just because something is priced as ‘discounted’ does not necessarily mean it was ever offered at a higher price.
Kids Clothing
If you’re looking for something for the kids and toddlers then BCS mall will probably have a place for you. There are lots of small stalls and shops that specialize in kids clothes here. Make sure you search on all the floors because they are spread out rather than focused in one area.
Opticians
Batam is a great place for you to buy your new glasses. Most Batam malls have resident opticians, BCS has five! They are Optik Internasional, Juwis Optical, Optik Ku, Wellness Optical and Bio Optical.
This is where you can get designer frames in Batam at a fraction of the normal price.
You can have your eyes tested at all of the opticians. Personally I would advise getting your eyes tested at home and then bringing the prescription. We had our daughter tested here in Batam and got a variety of results at different places.
Despite concerns about testing, the quality of the glasses are excellent and the price amazing. This was confirmed by our eye specialist in Singapore when he checked them over.
Food and Restaurants
You are never far away from something to eat or drink at BCS mall. From the time you walk in on the ground floor there is snacks like curry puffs, crepes and cakes for sale. The popular Baresto cafe is also located on the ground floor. Godiva coffee shop has a great layout central to the 1st floor where you can get really tasty coffee and reasonably priced meals. For all you fried chicken fans, you’ll find KFC on the first floor at the Baloi end of the mall near to Gramedia book store. If you’d prefer an alternative to KFC, Texas chicken is on the ground floor.
The 3rd floor at BCS mall is 95% food. There’s so much choice in one place here. I think this is the best mall for when there’s a group of you that all want to eat something different but want to stay close to each other. On this floor you’ll find Dim Sum, Thai, korean Japanese, Vegetarian and of course Indonesian food. There’s Taiwan street snacks, yogurt bars, flavored fries, burgers, bakso, noodles, nasi padang, pempek and many more to choose from. For western style food Gadeno New York Pizza & Steak is well worth a visit. If you can’t find something to eat here, you’re probably on the strictest diet ever.
Cinema
On the very top floor is the cinema at BCS mall . You may not have considered going to the cinema in Batam but it’s important to remember the prices here are very cheap and all the latest films are on show. If you’re looking for something to do when it’s raining in Batam, the cinema is a good choice.
