Historically if you wanted a beach holiday in the Riau Islands, Bintan has probably been your preferred choice.  Your best Batam beach choice was often a significant drive away from town, with no guarantee of adequate facilities like Water Sports or food & drink.  However, things have changed significantly in the past few years with some significant developments and improvements to many of the beaches in Batam.

There are now many options for you to choose from when looking for a Batam Beach and with improvements to Batam Transport, they are now far more easily accessible than they used to be.

Here we’ll try and give you an overview of most beaches along with any relevant information.

Bengkong

There was a time when if you wanted to stay close to amenities in Batam Center and Nagoya as well as spending time at the beach you would need to compromise due to the distance from town to suitable beaches.  That compromise no longer applies because of the improvements to many beach areas in the Bengkong area.

Most notable locations include the Next Level Koffie & Beachfront bar, Alio Beach Cafe and Deep Sea Beach Club to name a few.  These locations are now amongst the most popular primarily due to their proximity to town as well as entertainments like Batam Go Karts, the Wakeboard park and Ocarina theme park. Ideal for groups or  families with children in Batam.

Located at the end of the peninsula close to the site of the proposed new Batam Ferry terminal, you get an amazing view of the Singapore skyline as well as excellent entertainment.  Most of the bars also stay open after dark providing you with an amazing atmosphere for dinner.

If you’re looking to stay in a location close to the Batam Malls and Food Courts with easy access to the Bengkong area, our Batam Vacation Apartment Suites are ideal, especially for families, Friends & groups traveling together.

Nongsa

Nongsa itself has become a very popular place to visit.  Located on the north east peninsula there’s access to beaches, private resorts Batam Golf courses and recreation areas.

Nongsa Beach (Pantai Nongsa)

Nongsa is probably Batam’s most popular public beach.  This area gets very busy on public holidays and weekends.  Many locals use Nongsa beach to camp overnight too.  Nongsa is very popular with families as the waves are not too strong and there’s lots of shallow water allowing the kids to paddle.

The beach itself stretches over quite a long distance with many locals selling food & drink as well as renting pagodas for you to keep cool.  You can also find various water sports on offer here such as banana boat, para sailing & jet ski.

The beach is located just few hundred yards from Nongsapura Ferry Terminal and quite close to Palm Springs, Golf & Beach Resort.

There is a fee to pay on entry.

Payung Beach (Pantai Payung)

Possibly named Payung (umbrella) because of the concrete umbrellas found along the beach.  Not known as a destination for tourists so this is ideal if you want to experience a more local culture.  If you’re a seafood lover, then the location here is close to the popular Rezeki restaurant a favourite for Batam Seafood.

Payung beach is located just over 20Km from Nagoya and takes around 30 minutes.

Barelang

The Barelang area is where you’ll find the most Batam Beaches.  Barelang is located south of the main Batam Island and is actually separate islands connected by several bridges.  The most famous bridge (bridge 1) is a suspension bridge and a very popular location for seafood, photos and hanging out.

The first bridge is 25 Km from Nagoya so you should allow at least an hour to get there.  Beaches are considerably further.  The bridge gets very busy at weekends and grid locked during public holiday periods.

You’ll find most of the beaches quite populated at the weekend but literally deserted midweek with limited facilities as well as food & drink.

Melayu Beach Batam (Pantai Melayu)

With long stretches of golden sand and surrounded by lots of local tress and fauna you’ll find Melayu beach quite picturesque.  The local tress also provide good shade if you’re lucky enough to find any free on busy days but there’s also the option to rent a pagoda.

The waters here are quite shallow and ideal for snorkelling.

Visitors are usually required to pay a small fee for access.

Melayu beach is  a further 23 Km from Bridge 1 and located between bridges 4&5 (45 Km from Nagoya) , so you should allow at least an 90 minutes to get there, longer on weekends and public holidays.

Mirota Beach (Pantai Mirota)

Located very close to Bridge 5 south of Melayu beach is Mirota Beach.  As it’s not so close to the main road, you will need to navigate some unmade roads to access but because of it’s remote location it’s very scenic and often more quiet than other beaches.

Nice for swimming and despite the remote location you can often find locals offering some water sports.

Melur Beach Batam

You can find Melur beach a further 15 Km south of Melayu beach on Galang island.

Melur Beach is quite popular with locals and tourists. It’s a very scenic location set in natural surroundings.  The golden white sand is lined with many tall coconut trees.  The shoreline is shallow with clear waters that are ideal for you to paddle or swim.  At Melur (at weekends) you’ll also find boats for rental along with various water sports.

VioVio Beach Batam (Pantai Viovio)

Just few Km further south of Melur beach is VioVio

The beach is quite remote and access from a path leading from the parking area. At weekends you’ll find some small hawker stalls operating  as well as access to showers & toilets. There are benches provided for guests to sit along with  pagodas.  As with most public beaches there is an entry fee for visitors.

Sembulang Beach (Pantai Sembulang)

This beach has the rare distinction of free entry. However you may want to consider whether the free entry is worth the significant difficulty you’re likely to encounter to get there.

Located on the eastern side of Rempang Island it’s a very long drive via poor roads to get there.  Once there though you’ll have the privilege of amazing views and natural beauty.

If you want to visit Sembulang beach you should plan the whole day or visit as part of a stay in the Barelang area.

Tegar Putri Beach Batam

Similar to Sembulang beach, Tegar Putri is quite remote requiring access via difficult roads. Close to Bridge 6 (the final one south) you’ll find yourself at the furthest point south of Barelang. The advantage though is a more quiet serene experience on a beach mostly frequented by locals.
