We often drop  our guests staying with us or taking a  Batam tour to A2 Food Court.  It’s by far the best, most popular place to eat in Batam.

There was once no other food court in Batam that enjoys the patronage that A2 food court does.  However the newly opened Nagoya Food Court close to the original A1 site has meant there is now more choice than ever.  Great food and immense choice has meant the popularity of Batam food courts goes from strength to strength.

The name was probably used based on the success of the previous A1 food court.  A1 was Batam’s original place to eat Al fresco, that A1 food court is now long gone, replaced by the Nagoya City Walk Complex.

Part of A2 food court’s success story is probably due to its location. It sits at the foot of the  BCC hotel in the Penuin area of Nagoya, next to the popular BCS (Batam City Square) mall . This area of Batam is bustling with stores, spas hotels and numerous other places to eat.

BCS mall is the choice of many because it’s located next to A2.  The guarantee of a great place to eat after a long days shopping is a big seller.  Same goes for many of the hotels in this area. budget accommodation hotels like Penuin Hotel, Lovina Inn, are ideally located.  You can use either Batam Center or Harbour Bay ferry terminal to get here however from it’s 30 minutes and possibly and hour respectively from Sekupang and Nongsa ferry terminals.

A2 Food Court Opening Times

A2 food court comes to life around 6pm.  All the stalls in the covered area are open all day. And pretty full too. So here you can eat breakfast lunch and dinner,  or just drop in for a refreshing Es Cendol.

At A2 the earlier you arrive, the greater chance you have of obtaining a table.  Chances are that on a Saturday evening or a public holiday period, if you arrive after 8pm, you may need to wait for somewhere to sit.  It’s not uncommon to see groups of friends and families standing around eagerly looking for the next group about to leave with eyes on a prized table.

A2 Food Court Eating Options

The amazing choice and diversity of different foods and stalls (warungs) is what makes A2 unique.

This is not your ordinary food court with the ubiquitous offerings of seafood & sate. Whilst these standard dishes (which are offered in all other food courts of course) do a roaring trade,  it’s fair to say their vendors have upped their game.  Competition with other vendors over time has introduced other varieties of dishes to the food court.  It’s this diversity that has made A2 unique and so attractive.

Mookata BatamMookata

(pan pork in Thai) is a combination of Barbecue and steamboat.  Many claim that Mookata or Mu Kratha is Thai, however it’s origins are Korean according to Wikipedia. What easier way to enjoy a BBQ than have someone prepare it and place it on your table.  The flavors of the sauce (Sambal) here are distinctly Thai with pungent aromas & a kick that just hits the spot.  It’s served as a sharing dish for 2 or 4 persons and includes sliced pork, chicken fish balls, fungi, and really fresh vegetables.

Nasi Ayam Hainan Batam

Hainanese Chicken Rice (NasiAyam)

There are two stalls that serve this popular dish. The first one is inside the roofed area and often overlooked, the 2nd is at the edge of the outdoor area close to the car lot. At just $2 this is a bargain compared to the prices you’d pay for this local Asian delicacy in Singapore.  The taste will not disappoint.

Crispy Pork Sio Bak BatamCrispy Chinese Style Roast Pork (Sio Bak) is incredibly popular throughout Asia and the store serving it here will not disappoint.

The owner tells me he procures the pork from afar as it has a better taste than local variety.  When you taste it you’ll find it’s hard to disagree.  The chili sauce he serves with this dish is a perfect partner. There is also a tasty (if slightly different) cha siu on offer at this warung.

If you’d like to try this dish in the day time, this vendor also serves this dish at the Eatern Food court. You can find Eatern (Below the Eatern Hotel) directly over the road from BCS mall.

Indian Food –

Yes you can get Indian food at A2.  There are 2 stalls available, one selling various forms of Roti Prata with a sauce is to die for.  It tastes like it was flown fed ex straight from India. There’s also a quite delicious biryani on offer at the opposite side of the food court.  The two together are a fantastic combination at around $5

We also have a dedicated page for Indian food for you lovers of real spice

Maki BatamJapanese

A2 has a Japanese warung for those who love the taste of Japanese food. They also serve various flavoured makis.

If a restaurant is more you thing then you can find more info on our Japanese food and restaurants page

Korean

This is a choice of Korean barbecued pork or beef cooked by their very own Korean chef.  The better of the 2 dishes is by far the pork, because the amount of beef served is not quite sufficient.  At $5 a dish you may want to order two portions.

Honey Chicken Wings Batam

Honey chicken Wings

Get your order in as soon as you arrive as this is a very popular dish and takes awhile to BBQ.

Sayap Bakar as it’s called in Indonesia is served in full (10 wings) or half (5 wings) portions. Always good to have a plate on the table for everyone to share.

Hokkien Mee BatamNoodles

Without a doubt the best place for noodles is the Hokkien Mie stall in the roofed area.  This is the place to go if you want kway teow fried (goreng) or soup (basah), Bee Hoon (Vermicelli) Mi goreng .  Just a couple of dollars for incredible food here.

Seafood

There are several stores & some have live offerings.  Seafood is usually cheaper in the food courts than at seafood centres like Golden Prawn and Love Seafood.  That said you get what you pay for. I would personally recommend a trip to a specialized Batam seafood outlet where the choice, taste and value for money is better.

Sate BatamIn addition to the above, the ubiquitous dishes found in Batam food courts are not to be forgotten.

There’s delicious Sate, otak-tak, bak kuh teh, ayam bakar (BBQ chicken) and many more on offer. The quality has to be good here to at least match everyone else.

Drinks

The locals waiters are happy to take your order of practically any drink you can imagine.  No food court is without the beer girls of course, there’s many of them selling all varieties of beers.  Buckets of ice to keep your beer cool are available if you ask.Fresh Beer Batam

Sadly Batam’s very own Fresh beer (served in a chilled liter tower) is not yet on offer at A2.

Finally a mention to the staff at A2.  This is a really professionally run food court and the staff are incredibly helpful.  There’s an army of waiters on hand to clear tables, take orders and provide all kinds of assistance. If the rain starts to fall, they’re lightning fast at getting the covers on, if there’s a space for extra tables they’ll do their best to oblige.  Even the car park attendants are polite friendly and helpful despite the fact you don’t have to tip them.
